Gardaí have released a 58-year-old man arrested after officers were attacked during searches in Ballyogan south Dublin last night and in the early hours of this morning.

A file is to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

One Garda was hit a number of times with a baseball bat while a second was bitten by a dog.

The two were treated in hospital, where one still remains.

Gardaí have said they were investigating drug activities in the Carrickmines area when the attacks took place.

The series of violent attacks began at around 7.30pm last night when gardaí stopped a man for a drugs search but he escaped and ran into a house on Ballyogan Avenue, slamming the door on the pursuing gardaí.

Three people then came out, one armed with a metal baseball bat and a male Garda was hit a number of times in the head, face and body.

More people then arrived and attacked the male and female Garda who deployed their batons and pepper spray, and although more gardaí arrived they were outnumbered and withdrew.

A search warrant was secured at a special district court sitting last night and the house on Ballyogan Avenue was searched.

A number of men had to be restrained and a Garda from the Armed Support Unit was bitten by a dog.

The baseball bat, as well as a number of other items, were recovered and a 58-year-old man was arrested.

He is still being questioned at Dun Laoghaire Garda Station.

Two Garda were treated at Tallaght hospital, one for dog bites, the other has hand head and shoulder wounds although neither man's injuries are said to be life threatening.
