50 jobs are to go at CG Power Systems in Cavan. The company said the redundancies are necessary to maintain its competitiveness.

CG Power Systems, which manufactures industrial electrical power systems, has been based in Cavan since 1977 and employs 434 at the plant.

The job losses will apply across the organisation.

Minster for Business Heather Humphries who is TD for Cavan/Monaghan said the announcement was deeply regrettable and she acknowledged that the news will come as a blow to the town and the region.

Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil TD for the area Niamh Smith said that in the current uncertain economic climate a lot of people will be feeling uneasy.

She said this was not the type of news people like to get, particularly at a time when Brexit could have a major negative impact in the border region.
