Olympic boxing medallist John Joe Nevin said he will not be able to comply with a court order until he wins five more professional fights.

In 2016 the Mullingar man was convicted of violent disorder at Dominick Street in the Co Westmeath town and was told to pay €10,000 to the St Vincent de Paul Society.

Tullamore Circuit Criminal Court was told today that only €2,000 had been paid so far and another €1,150 could be handed over from bail money.

State solicitor John Hughes said Mr Nevin, aged 29 and from 7 St Anthony's Cottages, Mullingar, had missed two court appearances and was playing ducks and drakes with the court.

Mr Nevin, a separated father of two children, told the court he had not been in court on one occasion because he was in the United States for a fight and on the other occasion he was best man at a family wedding.

He said his professional boxing career had been blighted by injury, especially when two of his legs were broken, but he had made a miraculous recovery.

While had had won ten professional fights, he would not make any money from his current contract until he won a total of 15.

He hoped to remain injury-free and complete five fights this year but professional boxing was a "nasty business" where fighters were treated like pieces of meat.

Nonetheless he aimed to become a world champion and pay for his children to go to college and have his own house.

He thanked Judge Johnson for his patience and added: "I apologise if the prosecution thinks I'm trying to dodge and weave."

Judge Johnson told Mr Nevin he was still a national hero and he adjourned the matter to 8 May next for more information on his means and said it would be put back again to 30 October, with a view to the boxer paying the amount outstanding in 2019.

The violent disorder conviction arose from an incident in Mullingar town centre on 6 April, 2015.

Two other men were also convicted and ordered to pay smaller amounts to charity.

John Joe Nevin won a silver medal at the London Olympics in 2012 in the bantamweight division.
