The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection has confirmed that 2,800 people who are recipients of Carer's Benefit did not receive their weekly payment as normal this morning.

The department said there was an issue with the payment going out and that it has now been rectified.

All of those who were affected will receive their payment in their accounts by tomorrow morning.

Family Carers Ireland said it received a small number of queries in connection with unpaid benefit.

Catherine Cox of Family Carers Ireland said: "I’m sure whomever it does affect, it will be difficult for them. We have sent out a message to carers letting them know that this has happened."

Ms Cox said that people who receive Carer's Allowance were not affected by the error.

The department said: "The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection wishes to confirm that all customers of Carer's Benefit who experienced a delay with their payment today will receive payment in their accounts tomorrow morning, Friday 23 February."

The department apologised for the inconvenience caused and advised those affected that, if they need financial assistance today, they should contact the Community Welfare Service at their local Intreo Centre.
