Gardaí are investigating the death of an elderly woman whose body was found in her home in Limerick city.

The woman has been named locally as 78-year-old Rosie Hanrahan, who lived alone in the house.

Neighbours have described her as a lovely, friendly lady who was active in her community and kind to her neighbours.

Ms Hanrahan's body was discovered in a downstairs room of her home at New Road in Thomandgate at 1.30pm yesterday by a relative.

Gardaí believe she may have died violently. The house has been sealed off and declared a crime scene.

State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis will conduct a post-mortem examination which will determine the course of the investigation.

Gardaí are appealing for information from anyone who may have seen anyone at or near her house over the last day or so to help them with their investigation.
