An Irish man is due to appear in court in Leeds tomorrow charged with attempting to engage in sexual activity with a teenage girl.

The man travelled to Leeds yesterday where he was confronted by a group of people who had created a fake online profile of a 13-year-old girl.

They alerted the police and he was arrested and taken into custody.

He was questioned throughout the day and this evening a decision was made to charge him with encouraging a girl aged between 13 and 16 to engage in sexual activity.

He will remain in custody overnight and will appear before Leeds Magistrates court tomorrow morning to be formally charged.

Police have confirmed that the man is an RTÉ employee.

RTÉ issued a statement this evening in relation to a number of queries it has received from media outlets, including RTÉ News.

It said: "RTÉ has been made aware of this matter, which is being dealt with by the Yorkshire Police Force in the United Kingdom."

The organisation says no further comment will be made at this time.
