More than 20 people were injured in the attack in Lower Manhattan

Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, the man accused of committing yesterday's terror attack in Manhattan, was shot by a police officer as he attempted to flee the scene.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he is recovering from an abdominal wound.

The attack began when he drove his truck along a cycle path, hitting more than 20 people. Eight people were later confirmed dead.

The truck then collided with a school bus, injuring two adults and two children. After the collision, he got out of the vehicle brandishing what appeared to be two handguns.

A uniformed police officer assigned to the first precinct confronted him and shot him in the abdomen.

A paintball gun and a pellet gun were recovered from the scene

With authorities saying they believe the attack was a terrorist event, the lack of disclosure may reflect the nature of the investigation, which is still in its earliest stage.

According to US media outlets, the suspect shouted "Allahu Akbar" - Arabic for "God is greatest" – after leaping from his truck, which had crashed into a school bus as he sped away from the carnage.
