A motorist travelling at 177km/h in a 100km/h zone in Co Donegal was one of 225 vehicles caught speeding during Operation Slow Down.

Gardaí said that 140,223 vehicles were checked for speed during the 24-hour operation, which began yesterday morning.

The fastest speed noted- 177km/h - was on the N13 at Listellian in Letterkenny while another motorist was caught driving 171km/h in a 120km/h zone on the M7 in Nenagh, Co Tipperary.

In Co Kilkenny, a vehicle was checked at 87km/h in a 50km/h zone at Pennefatherslot and another was clocked at 74km/h in a 50km/h on the Phibsborough Road in Dublin.

Chief Superintendent Finbarr Murphy thanked road users who continue to drive safely and not put themselves or other road users in danger.

Operation Slow Down ran from 7am yesterday until 7am this morning to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding.

On Friday 13 October, of the 98,465 vehicles monitored, 241 were detected speeding with the highest being 90km/h in a 50km/h zone, less than 50 metres from a primary school at Thomastown, Belclare, Co Galway.
