President Higgins has urged people to heed warnings ahead of Hurricane Ophelia making landfall later today.
Speaking in Canberra this morning, the President said he hoped that the necessary precautions would be taken by people at home, in order to ensure safety.
As his State Visit of Australia continues, Mr Higgins has been meeting Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and is having discussions with the Australian Governor General, Sir Peter Cosgrave.
He is being given a full Ceremonial Welcome at the Governor's residence.
The President's first engagement of the day saw him laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in Canberra.
He is also due to meet opposition leaders and representatives of the Irish community in the Australian capital later today.
