A man in his 50s who was arrested yesterday by gardaí investigating the murders of three people in a house fire in Co Kildare 30 years ago has been released from garda custody.

A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Barbara Doyle, 20, was babysitting her nieces, eight-year-old Mary Ellen Byrne and three-year-old Kerrie-Ann Byrne, when the fire broke out on 20 September 1987.

Ms Doyle and the young sisters died in the blaze.

Gardaí now believe the fire was started deliberately.
