Newstalk has confirmed that George Hook will be stepping down from his lunchtime radio programme, following controversy over comments he made about rape.

He will return to the station in December when he will take on a new weekend show.

Mr Hook's remarks, which related to a rape case in the UK, caused widespread condemnation.

The presenter has apologised for the comments and said it was "unacceptable to suggest that blame could be attributed to victims of rape".

He was suspended by the station last week as part of a review process that has now concluded.

In a statement Newstalk said they will be announcing a replacement for his lunchtime show shortly, and will not be making any further comment on the issue.
