A 28-year-old man has died following a shooting in the Tallaght area.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Fortunestown Lane at around 9.20pm.
The 28-year-old fitness instructor was shot as he sat in a car at the CityWest Shopping Centre.
He managed to get out of the car and tried to escape but he was shot again in the head.
He received medical assistance at the scene but was pronounced dead a short time later.
A post-mortem examination is to be arranged and the scene has been preserved for a forensic examination.
The man is known to gardaí and has a number of convictions, including a drugs conviction after he was found with a small number of ecstasy tablets earlier this year.
Gardaí believe the victim could have been an associate of Darragh Nugent, a known gunman and drug dealer who was shot dead in Clondalkin last week.
One line of inquiry is the possibility that the two shootings could be linked, but detectives say it is too early to establish a motive for the killing.
Gardaí have issued an appeal for anybody who was in the area between 9pm and 9.30pm to contact them at Tallaght Garda Station on 01-666 6000, the Garda Confidential line on 1800 666111 or any garda station.
