North Korea has reportedly launched a missile that flew over Japan's Hokkaido region towards the Pacific.

The launch prompted the Japanese authorities to issue alerts and advise people to seek shelter.

South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported that the launch of the "unidentified missile" took place near Pyongyang.

The launch, comes after the United Nations Security Council imposed an eighth set of sanctions on the country over its banned missile and nuclear programmes.

The missile fell into the sea 2,000km east of Cape Erimo, Hokkaido.

North Korea fired a missile over Japan last month, in what officials called an "unprecedented threat" to the country.
