A 36-year-old Dublin man has failed in his attempt to have a charge of murder against him dismissed at the Special Criminal Court.

Frederick 'Freddie' Thompson from Loreto Road, Maryland in Dublin 8 was brought to court to hear the outcome of his application to have the case against him for murder dismissed before it even gets to trial.

However, three judges rejected his application.

Mr Thompson is accused of the murder of Daithi Douglas, who was shot dead as part of the ongoing feud between the Hutch and Kinahan crime gangs which has so far cost 12 lives.

Mr Douglas, 55, was shot dead on 1 July last year at a shop he ran - Shoestown on Bridgefoot Street.

Senior Counsel Michael O’Higgins had submitted there was not enough evidence to try Mr Thompson for the murder.

Ms Justice Isobel Kennedy said that the three judges had considered the evidence very carefully and were refusing the application.

The judge said while the ruling was not a qualitative assessment of the evidence, the court was satisfied there was sufficient evidence to send Mr Thompson forward for trial for the murder of Mr Douglas.

Mr Thompson was remanded in custody until October.
