A bathing ban has been lifted at Kilkee beach following consultation with the Health Service Executive, Clare County Council has confirmed.

Red flags, indicating that swimming was prohibited, were originally put in place last Wednesday due to a pump malfunction in the wastewater pump station.

That issue was resolved by Irish Water, but a restriction remained in place yesterday due to the possibility of elevated levels of bacteria in the bathing water arising from heavy rainfall over the weekend.

In a statement, the county council said that lifeguards are now on duty and blue flags are again flying at the beach.
