A car bomb explosion in Somalia has killed at least five people and wounded at least ten others, with the death toll likely to rise according to police.

The bomb detonated on a busy street in the Somali capital Mogadishu.

A Somali security ministry spokesman said the blast occurred in front of a row of shops.

Police said the bomb went off on the busy Maka al Mukaram road, with a witness telling Reuters that the blast was followed by big clouds of smoke visible in the sky.

A police officer told Reuters: "They were mostly pedestrians while others were shopping"

"The death toll may rise. Most of the injured ones are very serious," he added.

It is not yet clear who is responsible for the blast.
