The Department of Justice has said that the Garda Commissioner has not sought a "two-month leave of absence" from the minister or the Government.

Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan notified the department earlier this year of her intention to take leave in July/August 2017, in the normal course.

It is understood she is due to return to work in early September.

Ms O'Sullivan is due to appear before the Oireachtas Justice Committee later that month.

The commissioner is set to attend a Department of Justice meeting tomorrow.

Under Section 32 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005, the minister may authorise a deputy garda commissioner to perform the functions of the Garda Commissioner during any absence of the commissioner, such as when they takes annual leave or are abroad on business.
