US Republican candidate Karen Handel has won a closely contested special election for a House of Representatives seat in Georgia.
The vote, in a usually safe Republican seat in the suburbs of Atlanta, was widely seen as a referendum on President Donald Trump.
Democrats had hoped to capitalise on the president's low approval ratings but Ms Handel took 53% of the vote to Democrat Jon Ossoff's 47%.
Both candidates tried to focus on local issues and avoided mentioning Mr Trump.
But that did not stop Mr Trump from weighing in on Twitter, calling Mr Ossoff weak on national security and urging voters to support Ms Handel.
The Georgia vote is the most expensive congressional election in history, with spending on all candidates put at $56m - more than double the previous record.
The special election was held to fill the seat vacated by Tom Price after Mr Trump appointed him as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.
