A man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with the murder of a woman and the disbursement of her body in Co Wicklow.

The man was arrested in Wexford yesterday evening.

Gardaí investigating the discovery of the human remains have also confirmed that they were those of an adult woman.

Previous indications were that the remains, found in various locations in Co Wicklow since Saturday, were those of a man.

At a press conference, Superintendent Pat Ward said search teams had now discovered limbs and significant parts of a torso, as well as a head and hands which were found in a bag.

They are now satisfied that they have discovered most of the body and they believe all of the remains are part of one body.

Supt Ward said they could not put a precise age on the woman but she is a Caucasian, adult female.

DNA samples from a partial torso found on the Military Road near Enniskerry on Saturday night - the first discovery which led to wider searches - showed that those remains are those of a woman.

Gardaí and Defence Forces personnel also discovered more human remains at two locations in the search area.

So far there have been around eight separate finds of remains at different locations along Military Road between the Sally Gap and the village of Laragh.

Gardaí are still awaiting DNA results on other discoveries of human remains, while other finds have yet to be tested.

Supt Ward described it as troubling and said gardaí have not come across a case like this before.

Gardaí are examining CCTV footage and have also renewed their appeal to people who were in the area, those with cameras and dash cams and those missing loved ones.

They are also appealing for any information about any missing females from 2 June to 10 June.

Gardaí believe the victim was murdered recently and the body dismembered and dispersed sometime in the last week.

They have appealed for information from anyone who was in the area around Laragh, the Glenmacnass Waterfall and the Military Road during that time.
