The head of the Commission on the Future of Policing in Ireland has said she hopes the commission's work will result in an effective police service that enjoys the trust of the community.
Speaking on RTÉ's Drivetime, Kathleen O'Toole said she believes there is an appetite for reform and a sense of urgency, and that major transformation is definitely in order.
Ms O'Toole said the current challenges within An Garda Síochána are not unique to Ireland and that an extraordinary management team is needed to address the difficulties.
She said she wanted to assure the community and serving gardaí that the commission will engage with them.
She also said the Garda Commissioner inherited a poisoned chalice.
Ms O'Toole said her work feels like "unfinished business", saying her previous work in Ireland was eclipsed by the economic crisis.
The commission held its first meeting in Dublin today.
Following that meeting, it says that it will recognise and retain existing processes that work well but will also recommend systemic change
