The Irish Postmasters' Union (IPU) has called on the Government to help sustain and expand the post office network.

The organisation said it is frustrated at "inaction" to enhance the type of services available at locations around the country.

The union's annual conference is taking place in Westport, Co Mayo, this weekend.

IPU Treasurer Sean Martin said there were a range of ways in which post offices could offer additional products and services.

He said An Post had a trusted brand that could deliver a local service to local communities.

While the IPU accepts there is a move towards online financial transactions, it argues that there is still an appetite for face-to-face contact in post offices.

The union said management of the electoral register, provision of motor tax, banking services and other initiatives would all boost the role its members could play.

It said the Government should exploit this potential by allowing post offices to offer as wide a range of State services as possible.

The IPU said that without investment, the network will collapse and there will be a negative follow on for communities around the country.

The union is to enter into a talks process with An Post management in the coming weeks.
