Vandals have targeted the republican plot in St Mary's Cemetery in Newry in a graffiti attack.

Spray paint was used to deface the memorial in the Newry graveyard.

Sinn Féin MP Mickey Brady described it as an "outrageous attack".

"The Republican Plot in Newry was desecrated last night. All graveyards are sacred places and should be respected," he said.

He added: "This attack is outrageous and does nothing other than cause distress to families whose loved ones are buried in the plot."

The MP confirmed that events planned for today would take place as planned.

"At present there are efforts being made to clean up, as best as possible, the memorial. The Easter Rising  Commemorations due to take place here today, will go ahead as planned."
