Sinn Féin whip Aengus Ó Snodaigh has written to the Ceann Comhairle, Seán Ó Fearghail, to call for this week's Fianna Fáil Private Members motion regarding the garda controversies to be withdrawn or amended as he says it breaches Dáil rules.
Mr Ó Snodaigh said the purpose of the Fianna Fáil bill was to gazump the Sinn Féin motion on the same topic which will be debated this week.
He added that his party's bill has been on the Order Paper for over two weeks.
Mr Ó Snodaigh
claims the decision to allow the Fianna Fáil bill to be debated tomorrow is a clear breach of Standing Orders, and should have been ruled out of order as it overlaps with the Sinn Féin motion. He also claims it is also contrary to the agreed procedures of the new Dáil Business Committee that notice of the topic be given of proposed Private Member Bills at the meeting of the Business Committee a fortnight ahead of the proposed date for the debate.
The Sinn Féin motion calls for the Government to use its powers to remove the Garda Commissioner.
The Fianna Fáil motion states there is an urgent need to strengthen the management of the gardaí and it wants the Government to ask the Policing Authority to assess the role and capacity of the Garda Commissioner to restore public confidence in the force.
