A woman in her 70s has been shot in the leg during an attack at her home in south Co Dublin.

The 77-year-old woman was shot as she answered a call to her home at Oliver Plunkett Avenue in Monkstown at 11.20pm last night.

She was shot by a lone gunman who knocked on her front door.

When she opened the door the gunman did not speak but opened fire with a handgun, hitting her in the left leg. He then fled the scene.

Superintendent Martin Fitzgerald of Dún Laoighre Garda Station has appealed to anyone who was in the area between 9pm and midnight and who might have information about the incident to come forward.

The woman is being treated in hospital.

Forensic specialists are examining the scene and two shells have been recovered.
