A row has erupted in the southeast following the decision by the Government's Boundary Committee to recommend some of south Kilkenny switches to Co Waterford.

It has been proposed that 5,500 people and 20,000 acres of south Kilkenny will be transferred to Waterford.

Waterford City and County Council has welcomed the publication of the Report of the Waterford Boundary Committee, however Kilkenny County Council is unhappy with the proposal.

Furthermore, Fianna Fáil TD in south Kilkenny Bobby Alyward has ridiculed the proposal, while fellow Fianna Fáil TD John McGuinness said no one from Waterford or anywhere else would take "one inch of south Kilkenny".

He also likened it to an act of war.

Kilkenny County Council Chairperson Matt Doran said the whole process was skewed entirely towards the requirements of Waterford city.

South Kilkenny Fine Gael TD John Paul Phelan has threatened to resign his Dáil seat if the boundary change went ahead and said Fine Gael would lose significant support in south Kilkenny.

The decades long issue has raised tensions on both sides of the county border, particularly in Ferrybank, which is divided between Waterford and Kilkenny.

Proposed Waterford boundary extension

The final decision will rest with Minister for Local Government Simon Coveney, who indicated recently he will be considering all reports along with the other boundary reports.

Mr Coveney is not expected to make an announcement until the summer.

Waterford City Manager Michael Walsh says the next few months offers time for both councils to reflect on the report.

The recommendations of the three strong commission are to implement "a new Boundary between the Authorities that will move the entire Electoral Area of Kilculliheen and those parts of the Electoral Areas of Aglish and Dunkitt contained within the Area of Interest that lie south of the N25 bypass to the control of Waterford Council”.

Councillors in Waterford say the move will allow Waterford city to expand into its natural hinterland north of the River Suir.

It is recommended that the port at Belview stay in Co Kilkenny.

The Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government has just published the commission's report on their website.
