Nurses and Health Service Executive management met today in a bid to resolve the ongoing dispute over staffing, recruitment and retention.
A working group involving senior people from both sides will examine initiatives put forward by the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation and SIPTU last week.
This process will continue until Tuesday.
On Wednesday, the union's executive council will meet to consider the outcome of the discussions.
One of the proposals is a funded workplace plan which would see an increase in permanent whole-time posts in 2017.
One-day stoppages are a possibility after 90% of INMO members voted in December in favour of industrial action.
On Tuesday, the INMO will meet the Public Service Pay Commission.
