A British adult chat line is changing its telephone number so it will not resemble those of landlines in west Mayo.

Babestation is abandoning the UK 0982 prefix for its premium rate services, after a number of calls were mistakenly connected to 098 numbers in the Westport area.

It follows calls by Minister of State for Regional Economic Development Michael Ring for the company to take steps to end the nuisance and disturbance caused by the calls.

In a statement this morning, the satellite television channel said it was introducing new phone numbers for callers in Britain who wish to access its services from today.

It says this will ensure that calls are not connected in error to Irish homes or businesses.

The station sent a number of representatives to Westport this afternoon to meet with locals.
