A woman has died following a single-vehicle road crash in Co Tipperary this afternoon.

She has been named as Therese MacGowan, the mother of Pogues singer Shane MacGowan. 

Gardaí said the car she was driving hit a wall near Silvermines shortly before 3pm.

Ms MacGowan, who lived locally, was aged in her late 80s.

Her body has been taken to Limerick University Hospital where a post-mortem examination is due to be carried out tomorrow.

The stretch of road has been closed to facilitate a forensic examination. Local diversions are in place.
