Mercy University Hospital (MUH) Cork has introduced visiting restrictions due to a high incidence of admissions through its emergency department of with influenza.

The hospital is advising people with flu-like symptoms to visit their GP or South Doc in the first instance, instead of presenting at its ED.

MUH is also appealing to members of the public to only visit the hospital if it is absolutely necessary and not to visit if they have had flu-like symptoms in the previous four days.

Visiting at the hospital is restricted in all areas.

However, people visiting patients who are critically ill will be allowed to do so, as will parents and grandparents who are visiting children – but will restrict visitors to two at any one time with a patient.

Separately, Cork University Hospital has said 15 beds have been closed as the hospital deals with an outbreak of the winter vomiting bug (norovirus) and has visiting restrictions in place.

People are advised not to visit the hospital unless absolutely necessary.
