People across the country have taken part in the traditional Christmas swim, with many raising money for charities.

In Salthill, Co Galway, swimmers had to contend with choppy waters as gale force winds led to big waves in many areas along the west coast.

Meanwhile in Dublin the waters were calmer and at the Forty Foot in Sandycove, hundreds turned out to take the plunge in exceptionally mild weather.
