Crowds gathered at the Newgrange Neolithic passage tomb in Co Meath to celebrate the winter solstice.
With a clear sky, the rising sun lights up the inner chamber of the 5,000-year-old tomb.
However, rain and clouds this morning meant the sunlight did not enter the chamber on the shortest day of the year.
