The head of Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology's Castlebar campus has resigned from her position after concerns were expressed about the long-term viability of the Mayo campus, due to ongoing funding issues.
Dr Deirdre Garvey is to return to lecturing duties in the New Year.
Last month, GMIT told the Higher Education Authority that it could no longer support the campus from its own resources.
The Castlebar facility, which was established in 1994, is one of three that make up GMIT. The main campus is located in Galway and the college also has a presence in Letterfrack, Co Galway.
GMIT's governing body met with the HEA this week.
In a statement today, President of GMIT Fergal Barry referred to the challenge of the institute's "multi campus provision".
Dr Barry said discussions with the HEA had centred on the funding issue.
He said the sustainable development of all three campuses was an integral aim.
But he said a HEA review of funding, due next year, will have to address the costs this brings.
Arrangements for the ongoing management of the campus in Castlebar will be outlined to staff at a meeting next week.
