Pat Hickey's legal team in Rio de Janeiro has said he could be given his passport back tomorrow, allowing him to return to Ireland in the coming days.

Mr Hickey has temporarily stepped aside as president of the Olympic Council of Ireland during the investigation into alleged ticket touting at Rio 2016.

He has denied all allegations made against him.

Senior Counsel Arthur Lavigne said this afternoon that 1.5m Brazilian reals (approximately €410,000) has been lodged with the courts in Rio de Janeiro.

Now, they must wait for the judge to officially acknowledge receipt of the "loan" paid by the Association of National Olympic Committees in order to allow Mr Hickey's return to Ireland for medical treatment.

Once the courts confirms the lodgement, an official announcement must be made to allow for the passport to be returned to Mr Hickey.

Mr Lavigne expects that this may happen as soon as tomorrow.
