A 103-year-old woman spent almost 15 hours waiting on a trolley in the Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore, before finally getting a bed, RTÉ News has confirmed.

While she is not reported to be in a serious condition, she was admitted to a hospital bed this morning.

She attended the hospital’s Emergency Department yesterday evening and was seen within 19 minutes of arrival.

In a statement, the hospital said while it cannot comment on individual cases it did confirm that the woman was referred to a specialist team and the decision to admit was made within three hours.

The woman received the first available in-patient bed this morning.

Due to high levels of attendances and admissions currently being experienced by the hospital, the full capacity protocol is in place.

There were 35 patients waiting earlier today, but the hospital says this has now been reduced to zero.

The full capacity protocol emergency measure has been introduced at the hospital on 230 separate days so far this year.
