Discussions are to take place between RTÉ management and unions on the outsourcing of young people's programming to the independent sector.

In a statement issued this evening following talks between the two sides, the Trade Union Group said that management "had accepted that there has been a breach of the 'Guiding Principles Agreement' which commit to prior consultation on significant issues".

It was agreed at the meeting that talks would take place between the two sides.

Earlier this week, RTÉ announced that the making of young people's programmes was to be outsourced to independent programme makers.

The moved was criticised in the Seanad yesterday.

Speaking on RTÉ's Drivetime, Channel Controller for RTÉ One and RTÉ2 Adrian Lynch refused to confirm that the move had been suspended until the end of the consultation period which lasts until 31 January 2017.

He said the decision to close the children's television department was taken because of acute financial difficulties at the station and the organisation's obligation to outsource €40m of production to the independent sector.

Those factors remain, he said.

Fair City will not be outsourced despite reports in the media, he added.
