Labour Party leader Brendan Howlin has said that the "do nothing Government" is best summed up by Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross.

At a media event to mark 200 days of the Government, Mr Howlin said it has passed just 14 acts since taking office, and it will be 20 in total this year.

He said that compares to 66 acts passed last year.

Mr Howlin added that over 14,000 work days have been lost in the past quarter due to strikes, compared to none in the same period last year.

Speaking on RTÉ’s News At One, Mr Howlin said nothing of substance is being proposed by the Government because of fears that new policy initiatives will be defeated in the Dáil.

Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane RossMr Howlin described Mr Ross as Donald Trumpesque, accusing the minister of distracting from the fact he has not made any appointments to a State board since he came to office and has not published his department's priorities.

He added he was in favour of there being a majority of legal experts on the board to appoint judges in the same way that applies to architects and surgeons. He said there should be a register of interests for judges.

Mr Ross has criticised the way judges are appointed, and has described judges as masters of delay who resisted changes to the system for the past 20 years.
