Trinity College Dublin has joined a network of leading European universities that advocates for investment in third level research across Europe.
The college is the only Irish university to become a member of the League of European Research Universities.
Its membership was announced at a TCD ceremony attended by Minister for Education Richard Bruton.
LERU advocates for research-intensive universities in Europe.
According to its website it works to influence public policy and develop best practices.
Mr Bruton said membership of LERU was a major achievement for the university, and also for Ireland.
He said by joining this network of high-calibre universities, Trinity College Dublin's voice would be heard and have real impact on EU policy for research and innovation.
Provost of Trinity College Dr Patrick Prendergast said it was excellent news for Trinity and for the university sector as a whole.
He said membership of LERU would impact positively on the courses Trinity taught and the research it developed, as well as the education and future employability of graduates.
The university said that in order to be accepted by LERU, it underwent a rigorous evaluation on research volume, impact and funding, strengths in PhD training, and peer-recognised academic excellence.
Both Trinity and the University of Copenhagen have joined LERU today, bringing its total membership to 23 universities Europe-wide.
