Minister for Finance Michael Noonan will meet US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew in Washington DC.
Mr Noonan is the first minister to visit the US since the election last week of Donald Trump.
The issue of Apple and other US multinationals located in Ireland to avail of favourable tax arrangements, and the recent European Commission ruling, are likely to be top of today’s agenda.
Also up for discussion is the ongoing tax negotiations between the Department of Finance and the US Treasury Department with a view to updating long-standing treaties.
It is unclear at this stage whether a new arrangement can be agreed before President-elect Trump takes office in January.
He has said that tax reform will be a priority of his administration, including a reduction in federal income and corporate tax rates.
Minister Noonan will also hold several meetings at the International Monetary Fund and at the World Bank.
He will then travel to California tomorrow for IDA-related engagements with US business leaders.
