The head of the National Transport Authority has said the reason for fare increases on the Luas is a result of an effort to simplify the pricing structure.
Yesterday, the NTA announced that some Dublin Bus, Iarnród Éireann, Bus Éireann and Luas fares will increase from the start of next month.
Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Anne Graham said in order to simplify the fare structure the organisation needed to reduce the number of Luas zones.
Fares on the majority of Dublin Bus and Iarnród Éireann routes will remain the same, while some Bus Éireann customers will see some increases in cash fares on regional services.
However, some commuters will see a reduction in fares as rail stations in the greater Dublin area, such as Sallins and Kilcock, move from an inter-city fare structure into the commuter fare structure.
Ms Graham also said the NTA is attempting to bring fares closer together for Dublin Bus and Luas commuters.
However, she said "train fares will always be a little higher as the journeys are shorter".
Ms Graham said the money recouped from increased Luas fares will be channelled into the light rail network's infrastructure, while for Dublin Bus it will go towards increasing the services.
