The Minister for Public Expenditure has said gardaí will be offered a "substantial package" to find a resolution to the ongoing pay dispute.

Speaking on This Week on RTE Radio 1, Minister Donohoe said the negotiating team from the Garda Representative Association and the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors had been working hard on behalf of their members, and that "we have put in place what we believe to be a substantial arrangement and package to look to meet their needs."

However, the Minister would not be drawn on what any new package would entail.

Talks between both the GRA and the AGSI and the Department of Justice have resumed this weekend in an effort to avoid industrial action planned for Friday.

The talks are being facilitated by the Workplace Relations Commission on an ad hoc basis.

However, the AGSI have said while they currently have access to the WRC the "substantial issue of long-term access remains to be resolved."

Gardaí are calling for a pay rise of 16.5%.

Mr Donohoe also said the Government is in talks with all State agencies in relation to contingency plans should the planned strike go ahead.

He added that efforts are also being made to avert the planned action to ensure that such plans will not be needed.

He said he would not comment on whether the army was involved in contingency plan discussions.
