Micheal Martin questioned whether the Dáil should take a week off next week

The majority of the members of the committee that runs the Dáil schedule have accused Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin of undermining it.

It comes after Mr Martin questioned whether the Dáil should take a week off next week, despite this being decided some weeks ago by the committee.

Yesterday, the Dáil voted against plans to take a mid-term break next week.

Government Chief Whip Regina Doherty said she had originally suggested not taking the break, given the legislative workload, but was over ruled at the Dáil Business Committee.

Leas Ceann Comhairle Pat the Cope Gallagher called on members to decide on a return date, and this was agreed to be Wednesday 2 November at 2.30pm

The Dáil Business Committee was set up under new politics to get a consensus on issues.

At a meeting of the committee this afternoon, all of the members, with the exception of the Fianna Fáil representative, said Mr Martin had engaged in a populist move.

But the members agreed the committee should not be disbanded.

It was also agreed that what members decide at the committee should stand.

Earlier, Independents4Change wrote to the committee to express their "disgust" at what had happened and said it was also disrespectful to the staff of the Oireachtas who will have to adjust their plans at short notice.

They said the incident questioned the purpose of the committee and they are considering their continued role on it.

The committee will meet tomorrow to discuss next week’s agenda.
