A charity has warned there will be more deaths on the streets this winter as it counted 169 people sleeping rough across Dublin city.

There has been a 13% increase in the number of people aged 18 to 20 sleeping rough and a 22% increase in the number of women sleeping rough in the last year.

Inner City Helping Homeless say the number of rough sleepers peaked on Monday.

Spokesperson Anthony Flynn said that while the housing crisis is being dealt with by the Government, the rough sleepers crisis is not.

The Capuchin Day Centre on Bow Street is now providing meals for up to 300 people in the mornings and 550 in the afternoons.

Brother Kevin Crowley said the Government has failed rough sleepers and called for action and not worlds from Minister for Housing Simon Coveney.

The Dublin Region Homeless Executive and Dublin City Council have said an average of 140 people are engaged with Dublin's Housing First Service every night.

In a statement the DRHE said "it is clear that increased rates of reported rough sleeping are related to the capacity of available emergency accommodation provided in the Dublin region."

The statement added that the council is working to expand emergency accommodation provision and will bring an additional 210 bed spaces into use as soon as possible.
