Homeless families will be housed in "stacked" modular homes according to plans by Dublin City Council.

Two sites to accommodate a total of 100 units for an "Apartment Volumetric Build" are currently being selected by the council.

Marguerite Staunton, senior executive officer, told councillors on the housing committee that the intention is to be able to build up.

She also informed the councillors that a total of 131 modular homes will be ready early next year in Finglas, Cherry Orchard, Belcamp and Drimnagh.

Up to 70 more will be built in the future on sites being surveyed in Finglas, Ballyfermot and Kilmore.

Up to now just 22 modular homes have been completed and are occupied in Poppintree, Ballymun.

The volumetric build homes are scheduled to be ready in 2018.
