Up to 2,000 people took part in a protest in Waterford this afternoon calling for 24/7 cardiac care for the regional hospital.

Protesters from Waterford were joined by people from Wexford, Kilkenny and south Tipperary.

In heavy rain, protesters reiterated what they say is an injustice that University Hospital Waterford has not been given a second 'cath lab' or 24/7 cover for certain cardiac cases.

Organisers said they were happy with the turn-out considering the weather.

Minister for State John Halligan was one of those who marched. Afterwards he revealed that behind-the-scenes discussions are taking place which he hopes will lead to Government Ministers meeting with hospital consultants in the coming weeks.

When asked about the Dublin Bus strikes and possible industrial action at Bus Éireann, he said he supports the workers' right to strike but added there should be room for negotiation.
