The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it has withheld further funding from aid agency Goal as an investigation into procurement practices for humanitarian programmes in Syria continues.

The US Agency for International Development earlier this year launched an investigation into "alleged supply chain irregularities" relating to US-sponsored aid programmes in Syria.

In a statement, the Department said it "remains seriously concerned about the issues under investigation by the US."

"We have been in regular contact with the US authorities and with Goal since we learned of the investigation in late April.

"Pending further clarification on the issues under investigation, the Department took the decision to withhold funding which had been allocated for Goal's development and humanitarian work in 2016."

A total of €10.1m in Irish Aid funds has now been held back, including €7.16m in long-term development funding.

The charity's own investigations have led the agency to terminate the employment of two people locally in Turkey.

Goal also commissioned a report into the matter, which has been passed to the Department at its request.

"The Department has received this report on a confidential basis as it is part of the on-going US legal investigation.  It is currently being examined," the Department continued.
