A boil water notice for An Cheathrú Rua in Co Galway has been lifted, six months after it was imposed.

Almost 5,000 people were subject to the restrictions, which were introduced after cryptosporidium was detected in the water supply last March.

Homes and businesses in An Cheathrú Rua, Cinn Mhara, Bealadangan, Camas, Casla, Gleann Trasna and Muckanagh were impacted.

As part of the effort to deal with the problem, the area's water treatment plant was modified and increased controls were implemented.

Irish Water says the plant now meets all drinking water regulations.
