Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has said it is not a question of if he will stand down as leader of the party, but when.

He was speaking at the party's think-in in Co Meath and described Sinn Féin as a party in transition.

Mr Adams said the party has a plan, and while it would not be making it public, there will be a consultation process with grassroots members regarding a ten-year plan for the party.

He also said the party would be looking at the pay of its elected representatives, who currently take home the average industrial wage.

Members along with party strategists are meeting to discuss a number of issues including the upcoming budget and also the implications of the UK referendum to leave the European Union.

The party is campaigning to respect the majority in the North who voted to remain in EU.

Sinn Féin representatives from the Oireachtas, Stormont Assembly and the European Parliament are attending the event, which will conclude tomorrow.

It has emerged that the party will be tabling a Private Members' motion to abolish water charges when the Dáil returns.

The move is aimed at putting pressure on the Government and also on Fianna Fáil which now favours abolishing the charges though it previously wanted to suspend them.

Mr Adams also suggested an all-island probe into the ongoing controversy involving the sale by NAMA of its Northern Irish loans.

He said if the Democratic Unionist Party did not support such an investigation it could leave them open to suggestions it has something to hide. He said e does not think DUP leader Arlene Foster has anything to hide.

There will also be a presentation from Twitter on the use of social media and combating cyber bullying.

Mr Adams said he and others had been subjected to abuse online. He added that no one in Sinn Féin should be involved in anything but the best of behaviour, in particular on social media.
