Two Irish tourists were among 24 people injured when a coach crashed in Barcelona on its way to the airport, local government officials said.

Three of the casualties were in serious condition after the bus crashed at around 3.10am local time during heavy rain in Catalonia, according to the region's ministry of health.

Among the injured were tourists from Ireland, Britain, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Belarus and Spain.

The driver was also hurt.

The coach had left the resort of Lloret de Mar, 75km north of Barcelona, and was crossing through the city en route to El Prat airport.

It was travelling on a ring road which passes close to the waterfront when it crashed.

All of the injured were taken to hospitals across the city.

Fifteen sustained light injuries, while six were said to be in moderate condition.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was looking into the matter and "stand ready to provide consular assistance if requested".
