The Board of Management at the Oberstown youth detention centre have held an extraordinary meeting in the wake of a number of incidents at the centre.

A member of staff was injured and a rooftop fire broke out at the facility last week.

In a statement the board said they are hoping to receive a briefing on the incidents from the campus director in the coming days.

A garda investigation is also under way into the incidents.

The board has also said they are anxious to find a permanent solution to the industrial relations matters at the centre.

Earlier this week SIPTU and IMPACT trade unions said the new expanded campus is badly designed to deal with vulnerable young people and violent offenders.

The board has requested unions and the centre's management to return to discussions at the Workplace Relations Commission in an effort to end the dispute.

They have also called on the unions to defer any further strike action to allow this to take place.
