US Republican White House hopeful Donald Trump has met Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto and declared that the United States has the right to erect a border wall to stem illegal immigration.

"We recognise and respect the right of either country to build a physical barrier or wall on any of its borders," Mr Trump told reporters at the presidential residence after the two men held closed-door talks.

He said however they did not discuss who will pay for the wall, despite Mr Trump persistently stating throughout his campaign that Mexico will foot the bill.

In an interview with CNN in July, Mr Pena Nieto said there was "no way" that Mexico would pay for any such wall.

Some Mexicans took to the streets in protest of Mr Trump's arrival.

In a tweet, the Mexican president said he had invited both candidates in the US Presidential election - Mr Trump and his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton - to have a conversation about bilateral relations between Mexico and the United States.

Last night, he tweeted that Mr Trump had accepted that invitation and the two men would hold a private meeting.

Mr Trump tweeted that he was "very much" looking forward to meeting the Mexican President.
